The SuperNOVA 1000 G5 costs about the same as the similar-capacity G3 model that it is

The SuperNOVA 1000 G5 costs about the same as the similar-capacity G3 model that it is destined to replace in EVGA’s portfolio. Unfortunately, its performance is not up to the G3 unit’s levels and to make matters worse, the overall noise output exceeds 43 dB(A), so this is not the ideal power supply for silent operating systems. U.S. tariffs put an end to EVGA’s close cooperation with Super Flower, so EVGA turned to FSP which is a good OEM with reliable products, but it cannot meet the performance levels of the Leadex platforms, used in the G3 models. EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G5 Pros Full power at 47 degrees Celsius Good ripple suppression (up to full load) Tight load regulation Long hold-up time Fully modular Compact dimensions Cons Noisy Increased Vampire Power Poor transient response 18AWG gauges Lower than 70% efficiency with 2% load No Alternative Sleep Mode support Ripple with 110% load Verdict EVGA’s 1000 G5 has acceptable performance, but the company’s own G3 1000 is much quieter and more efficient for about the same price. 3/5 $199.99Newegg (function(){ var shopLinkJsData = { event: ’10′, evars: {“eVar43″:”$199.99&#...

College men’s hockey: Bulldogs fall 5-3 to Alberta in exhibition

The last time Minnesota Duluth opened the season with an exhibition against the University of Alberta at Amsoil Arena back in 2017-18, the Bulldogs lost 4-3 to the Golden Bears. With that in mind, consider Saturday’s result to start 2019-20 — a 5-3 exhibition loss to the Golden Bears at Amsoil Arena — a good omen as the Bulldogs begin their quest to three-peat as national champions. “They play the game the right way, that’s why I wanted them to come back,” UMD coach Scott Sandelin said of the Bears. “I knew it was going to be a good test for us and a chance to get some young out there.” A trio of juniors — Justin Richards, Dylan Samberg and Nick Swaney — scored for the Bulldogs, who open the regular season next weekend with a nonconference series against UMass-Lowell. The 2019 NCAA championship banner will be unveiled next to the 2011 and 2018 banners prior to the 7:07 p.m. puck drop. Richards, who was named an assistant captain this week alongside co-captains Nick Wolff and Hunter Shepard, tied the game at 1-1 via a shorthanded goal in the final 21 seconds of the first period. Sophomore wing Cole Koepke created the chance by forcing an Alberta turn...

It’s time once again for the annual Cooling Showcase. The NEWS’ annual issue has traditionally introduced the latest cooling units available for the upcoming summer season. The intent is to help contractors prepare for this busy period by doing the research that will help them to distinguish between brands. Like last year, this year’s Cooling Showcase is split into two parts — commercial and residential. This issue focuses on the commercial side of the air conditioning industry, while the April 15 issue highlighted new offerings in the residential cooling market. Included in the coverage is feature-specific information about each individual product as submitted by the manufacturers. The product chart includes technical facts, such as unit tonnage, refrigerant type, efficiency rating, and cooling capacity. The photo feature below provides more in-depth information on the features of each individual unit and also includes technical support information from the manufacturer. The manufacturers provided all of the data included in the product grid, as well as in the photo feature. Nikon introduces new flagship hunting riflescope –

Twenty-three years after the debut of the original MONARCH riflescope, Nikon unveils an all-new line of long-range optics designed specifically for discerning hunters. For 2019 and beyond, MONARCH M5 becomes the new patriarch of the Nikon hunting riflescope family.  Engineered from the inside out to check all the boxes on the long-range riflescope wish list, MONARCH M5 illustrates Nikon’s Glass First principle as it pertains to the development of its hunting optics. The highly efficient, 4x zoom optical system in the MONARCH M5 was created with the explicit goal of delivering a brighter, sharper, higher contrast sight picture for the times it’s vitally needed—just as the first hint of light appears, or the last vestiges disappear into the darkness. The MONARCH M5’s rugged and robust 30mm aircraft-grade aluminum main body tube not only protects the riflescope’s optical system—but also increases its internal adjustment range.  (Beginning in 2019, all Nikon riflescopes bearing the MONARCH name will utilize the 30mm tube platform.) Reticle choices for the MONARCH M5 line have expanded to include Nikon’s MK1-MOA hash mark reticle—meaning long-range dialers will be able to make use of...

In my opinion, that deserves some respect. In other words, if you find a budget-friendly item on Amazon that has tons of glowing reviews, consider adding it to your cart. I mean, any product with multiple five-star ratings and written reviews is probably worth trying. Still, it’s not easy to find those hidden gems in the maze that is Amazon. Here’s the good news, though: This time, I’ve done some of the legwork for you. This is a collection of various amazing items on Amazon ...

Westport church installs final piece of 8-year renovation journey

WESTPORT — A new, custom-built pipe organ marks the final piece of an eight-year journey for Saugatuck Congregational Church after a devastating fire years ago. The organ will be dedicated on Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. with a free performance for the community, and will signify the end of a rebuild that started after a fire partially destroyed the historic church on Nov. 20, 2011. Heather Hamilton, music director at Saugatuck Church, said upon visiting the church following the fire she saw firsthand the destruction left behind. “When I walked into the choir room the whole wall was not there. I was looking at the trees,” she recalled. “The piano was pushed across the room from the blast of the fire hose, and it was so charred you couldn’t even tell what color it was anymore.” The sweeping fire damaged the kitchens, meeting rooms, and left behind soot as well as water damage from the fire department’s hose. Five pianos, the church’s original pipe organ and 100 years worth of music were also destroyed. To date, the cause of the blaze is unknown. Following the fire, the congregation was displaced for four years, worshiping at Temple Israel and other churches before reopening in 2015. “A lot...

Apple: Strong iPhone 11 Series Sales To Drive Upside Surprise

The days since the launch of Apple’s (AAPL) new iPhones have seen most analysts react positively to the new lineup, as well as note that iPhone 11 Pro sales appear stronger than expected. Now, more than three weeks after the Sept. 10 event, delivery dates for iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max stretch 3-4 weeks for online orders from the U.S. Apple site. Apple appears to have underestimated 11 Pro demand, and that’s good news for investors. Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller makes the case for iPhone 11 Pro value. Source: Apple. Most analysts who cover Apple have offered observations to the effect that iPhone 11 or 11 Pro sales are running ahead of expectations, and many of these have raised price targets and/or ratings. I say this on the basis of reporting by Philip Elmer-DeWitt on his site ped30.com. Elmer-DeWitt has covered Apple since the beginning and has acquired numerous industry contacts. He gets a copy of virtually every research note published about Apple, and he generally quotes from them liberally. He provided a good summary of initial analyst takes on Sept. 11. In this section I’ll only highlight a few of the analysts who issued researc...
