Gingerbread houses are a fun seasonal staple for pretty much everyone—except architects, who must suffer through all sorts of under-engineered amateur constructions with phony good cheer. But now DC’s building professionals finally have their own outlet: Gingertown DC. Created by the architecture firm David M. Schwarz, Gingertown is an annual competition for local architecture, real estate, and engineering groups. Contestants have three hours to craft a completely edible structure based on their expertise. This year’s theme is Venice, which gives competitors the opportunity to address climate change and create sinking buildings amid blue-jellybean rivers. The engineering firm Walter P. Moore has participated in the competition for the last eight years; senior associate Tom Yost says preparations begin about a month before the event and include foamcore models and scale calculations. Building with Necco wafers and other goodies is fun but also a sweet challenge. “As structural engineers, a lot of the time we’re just dealing with concrete and steel,” Yost says. “This is a good chance for us to flex our architectural muscle.” The actual competition is open only to contestants, but ...

Producing glass objects using 3D printing is not easy. Only a few groups of researchers around

Producing glass objects using 3D printing is not easy. Only a few groups of researchers around the world have attempted to produce glass using additive methods. Some have made objects by printing molten glass, but the disadvantage is that this requires extremely high temperatures and heat-resistant equipment. Others have used powdered ceramic particles that can be printed at room temperature and then sintered later to create glass; however, objects produced in this way are not very complex. Researchers from ETH Zurich have now used a new technique to produce complex glass objects with 3D printing. The method is based on stereolithography, one of the first 3D printing techniques developed during the 1980s. David Moore, Lorenzo Barbera, and Kunal Masania in the Complex Materials group led by ETH processor André Studart have developed a special resin that contains a plastic, and organic molecules to which glass precursors are bonded. The researchers reported their results in the latest issue of the journal Natural Materials. The resin can be processed using commercially available Digital Light Processing technology. This involves irradiating the resin with UV light patterns. Wherev...

Sapphire Situation: Expedition to Ethiopia’s sapphire fields

This led to correspondence between Lucas and Teweld Abay, director of the Mineral Marketing and Value Chain Directorate over the next several months to coordinate a joint project between GIA and the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines Petroleum & Natural Gas. Tucson 2017 and 2018 were abuzz with interest regarding Ethiopian emeralds and to a lesser degree Ethiopian sapphires. A few Ethiopian dealers showed sapphires at the show that were obviously magmatic in nature. Most of the gemstones were very dark blue and heavily included with silk. There were some bright blue stones, however, that sparked a great deal of interest. News of the sapphires had begun entering the gem trade in early 2017. As much of the talk in the gem trade was of this upcoming source of gemstones, GIA was compelled to conduct firsthand on-the-ground research. The Ethiopian Ministry of Mines also wanted third-party expertise to be involved in joint research on the Ethiopian gem deposits. The decision was made for GIA to visit the main gem producing areas of the East African country of Ethiopia, including sapphire, emerald and opal mining areas. The expedition dates were set for the end of February 2018 through t...

Black Friday 2019: A guide to some of the best technology deals

Staten Island shoppers rushed to their favorite retailers on Black Friday 2018 in search of deals. (Staten Island Advance/Thomas Erik Bascome) STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Doorbusters — you’ve got to love ‘em. If you’re the type to wait on a long Black Friday line for your favorite store to open, there’s no doubt you’re in for some great technology deals this season. The most exciting deals on the day after Turkey Day are usually on electronics, since all major retailers are competing for shoppers’ attention. But weeding through the offers can be a daunting task. “Doorbuster” is used differently by various retailers. It’s usually a deeply discounted item, available only for a short time the moment Black Friday shopping begins. These deals differ from regular Black Friday discounts, which aren’t as dramatically reduced, but also are not offered in extremely limited supply. Some retailers use different terminology. Walmart calls them “Special Buys.” But the concept is the same. BlackFriday.com has done the homework for us, studying and comparing thousands of ads from Target, Best Buy, Walmart and Kohl’s and compiling a comprehensive list of all the best doorbusters. Th...

The Scottish National Party launched its manifesto for the December general election today (27 November) with a pledge to bring to market a £3 billion portfolio of projects ready for ‘green finance investment’. Other pledges include a commitment to campaign for the UK to remain aligned with EU environmental regulations even if Brexit takes place. In a chapter entitled “Climate change – a moral and economic responsibility”, the manifesto reads: “We have a huge opportunity to lead the world in building the new economy of the future, creating sustainable technologies and jobs that can secure our prosperity.” While the word ‘recycling’ does not appear once in the manifesto, the party’s website points to what it says the SNP has done to increase recycling since being in government. The website says: “Household recycling is at its highest ever levels – with over 45% of household waste recycled in 2017, and, for the first time ever, exceeded the amount of waste sent to landfill. “The SNP Scottish Government introduced the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, which require all businesses and organisations to separate key materials for recycling, while most food businesses are also required to...

What Happens To Tesla When The Sleeping Auto Giants Awake?

The history of automotive production is littered with the fallen badges of car companies that shone brightly but fell by the wayside in the face of competition from the industry’s giants. Whether you pine for an AMC, a Studebaker, or a Saab, it’s a Ford or a Honda you’ll be driving in 2019. In the world of electric cars it has been a slightly different story. Though the big names have dipped a toe in the water they have been usurped by a genuinely disruptive contender. If you drive an electric car in 2019 it won’t be that Ford or Honda, it could be a Nissan, but by far the dominant name in EV right now is Tesla. Motor vehicles are standing at the brink of a generational shift from internal combustion to electric drive. Will Tesla become the giant it hopes, or will history repeat itself? The Citroën Berlingo électrique. Thilo Parg [CC BY-SA 3.0]To watch the development of electric vehicles over the last couple of decades has been to witness a quiet revolution from low-production oddities to serious contenders. In 1999 a French van, Citroën’s Berlingo électrique, would have represented the pinnacle of commercially available electric  transport. It had nickel metal hydride batterie...
