The 200 was once the most common off-road bike in America; then one day it just

The 200 was once the most common off-road bike in America; then one day it just vanished. Now we have a handful of candidates seeking to rekindle the flame. There are 125s, 144s, 150s and 200s coming back to the U.S. market in an attempt to attract fans of lightweight two-stroke off-road bikes. We collected two of the most promising offerings for a one-on-one comparison—the Beta 200RR and the Husqvarna TE150. They present two very different approaches to the same goal. BETA 200RRIt’s interesting that Beta would be one of the companies to bring back the 200. Back when the KTM 200 was in its heyday, Beta wasn’t even making off-road bikes. Now, the small Italian maker has come to be defined by its two-stroke off-road bikes, so the 200RR is a logical addition to the line. When the company introduced a new 125 two-stroke last year, that motor was designed to be a 200 as well. That’s more complicated than you might think; you can’t accomplish that with an increase in bore alone. The piston gets too heavy for the short stroke, and it just doesn’t run right. So, the new motor was designed to accept a larger crank, as well as a new top end. The 200RR motor is still very similar to the 12...

A bike is not just a bike; for both you and your kid, it is freedom.

A bike is not just a bike; for both you and your kid, it is freedom. A great toddler bike means adventure and exploration and independence. And for most Americans, a bicycle meant wheels before wheels involved gas and insurance and a summer job. For your child, his or her bike is also a way to spend time with you, making it even more important to get your kid safe, balanced, and moving, whether that means with a balance bike or a toddler bike with training wheels.  While many companies make bikes for toddlers, the balance bike concept in the U.S. came from a father who wanted to share his love of two wheels with his son. Strider has been making toddler-friendly bikes for more than 12 years, but it’s no longer the only game in town. Beyond balance bikes, some parents may prefer the tricycle for added stability, while still others may choose the pedal bike with a good pair of training wheels.  In terms of safety, we consulted expert Dr. Benjamin D. Hoffman, the chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention. His advice is common-sense and simple: “Look at the manufacturers’ recommendations for who can use it and how it’s supposed t...

AI could dramatically improve health care—unless it destroys it — Quartz

You could be forgiven for thinking that AI will soon replace human physicians based on headlines such as “The AI Doctor Will See You Now,” “Your Future Doctor May Not Be Human,” and “This AI Just Beat Human Doctors on a Clinical Exam.” But experts say the reality is more of a collaboration than an ousting: Patients could soon find their lives partly in the hands of AI services working alongside human clinicians. There is no shortage of optimism about AI in the medical community. But many also caution the hype surrounding AI has yet to be realized in real clinical settings. There are also different visions for how AI services could make the biggest impact. And it’s still unclear whether AI will improve the lives of patients or just the bottom line for Silicon Valley companies, health care organizations, and insurers. “I think that all our patients should actually want AI technologies to be brought to bear on weaknesses in the health care system, but we need to do it in a non-Silicon Valley hype way,” says Isaac Kohane, a biomedical informatics researcher at Harvard Medical School. If AI works as promised, it could democratize health care by boosting access for underserved commun...

32 Things That’ll Probably Feel Like A Treat, But Are Actually Practical

We hope you love the products we recommend! Just so you know, BuzzFeed may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. A mini waffle maker that’ll not only make waking up simply ADORABLE, but encourage non-morning people to make quick and easy breakfasts (important!!!). And! It’s a great thing to have in order to save space if you’re the proud owner of a teeny kitchen. Promising review: “If you like waffles, but don’t want to eat gigantic ones and/or don’t have a ton of counters pace to spare for a full size waffle maker, this little thing is well worth the price. Another benefit of this smaller size is that you can use the waffles from this little machine to make sandwiches, for those who like breakfast on-the-go, not to mention a sweet and savory treat in the morning. We have actually been surprised by how much we use this item considering other waffle makers we’ve purchased all end up collecting dust in the back of a cupboard. This really is a waffle maker that you’ll use more than once; in fact, diehard waffle fans will probably use it every day.” —Memory Lane To l...

What Is Palladium? It’s Suddenly the Most Precious Metal

Palladium is now the most valuable of the four major precious metals, with an acute shortage driving prices to a record. A key component in pollution-control devices for cars and trucks, the metal’s price doubled in little more than a year, making it more expensive than gold. It’s a lustrous white material, one of the six platinum-group metals (along with ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium and platinum itself). About 85% of palladium ends up in the exhaust systems in cars, where it helps turn toxic pollutants into less-harmful carbon dioxide and water vapor. It is also used in electronics, dentistry and jewelry. The metal is mined primarily in Russia and South Africa, and mostly extracted as a secondary product from operations that are focused on other metals, such as platinum or nickel. Supply hasn’t responded to growing demand. Usage is increasing as governments, especially China’s, tighten regulations to crack down on pollution from vehicles, forcing automakers to increase the amount of precious metal they use. In Europe, consumers bought fewer diesel cars, which mostly use platinum, and instead chose gasoline-powered vehicles, which use palladium, following revelations that...

Injection Molding: Upgraded PET Preform System Runs Longer Without Maintenance : Plastics Technology

SIPA XForm 500 injection molding system is now guaranteed for 11 million cycles between maintenance stops. The XForm 500 PET preform injection molding system from SIPA of Italy has been upgraded again for longer mold life between maintenance cycles. Previously, the Gen3 system cold halves were guaranteed to run for 8 million cycles with no flash over 0. 2 mm. Now, a new surface treatment and durable mold structure with very low deformation allows for a 40% longer guaranteed period—11 million cycles—without maintenance. Since the 500-ton system can run preform molds with up to 180 cavities, it could produce almost 2 billion preforms without mold maintenance. The system is also said to stand out for its speed (lock-to-lock times below 2.5 sec), versatility (accepting any generation of legacy preform tooling from any major moldmaker), and energy efficiency (under 220 W/kg of PET). If you were buying an injection molding machine 20 years ago, you had to decide between a toggle or fully hydraulic clamp and that was pretty much it. Plastic Mould Most molders work with two parameters for establishing second-stage pressure. But within Scientific Molding there are actually four. One of t...
