Knoch swimmer Braden Zukowski takes nothing for granted in WPIAL title quest

Knoch senior Braden Zukowski listens to instruction from his Racer-X club coaches during a practice Dec. 30, 2019, at Deer Lakes High School. Knoch’s Braden Zukowski finished third overall in the boys 100-yard breaststroke at last year’s WPIAL Class AA championships at Pitt’s Trees Pool. He is the top returner from that race, as both the champion, Belle Vernon’s Robert Spekis, and the runner-up, Greensburg Salem’s William Crites, graduated. While Zukowski figures to be one of the favorites this season, he said he is not taking anything for granted in his quest for a WPIAL title. “Everyone, I know, is improving, and the competition is going to be fierce,” said Zukowski, who swam a personal-best 1 minute, 0.14 seconds at WPIALs last March before taking 12th at states (1:00.60). “There could be someone who switches events or someone new who has a lot of talent and ability. It won’t be easy at all, but it’s a goal of mine to win. I feel I am preparing myself well to be in position to do that. I am just concentrating on being able to swim the best time that I can and not thinking about anyone else right now.” Zukowski, who also trains and competes with the Racer-X club team, picked u...

The Key to Having a Long Career in Photography is All About the Body.

There is no way to stay on top of your creative game if your body is falling apart. The wear and tear of shlepping gear up 4 flights of stairs, down alleys and packing, repacking and packing again takes its toll on our bodies. Here’s a few ideas, tips and tricks to help you work until freelancers get good healthcare….  As I approach 50 years old there is a quiet voice in the back of my head that pipes up every now and then. Mostly complaints, but I’ve figured out how to silence that voice at least until I get into my hundreds. Strength training. Yeah, I know we’re all too busy, too much travel, too many hotel rooms, but if you can’t pick up a camera you can make an image. I’m not any sort of doctor, or trainer but I can tell you that my lower back, wrist, shoulder and neck are much better, much stronger and much better functioning than they were a couple of years ago. I’m not a gym junkie either, I spend a maximum of 4 hours a week on training and it’s worth every moment. I partake in Crossfit, but there are tons of other options, yoga, martial arts, Olympic lifting, and the list goes on. I like the combination of strength and cardio that Crossfit provides.   As photograph...

When you’re a new, small player up against the established big boys it pays to stand

When you’re a new, small player up against the established big boys it pays to stand out from the crowd, which is precisely what this little Jimny has been built to do. IT MIGHT be small, but this Suzuki makes a huge visual impact. And it’s not just the wild wrap – the Suzuki Jimny has been lifted, widened and protected, and over the past few months it’s grown on its owner so much that it’s morphed from mere a promotional tool to an almost-daily driver. The Jimny’s owner is Gavin Duffield, the man behind AFN 4×4 Australia. Chances are you’ve heard of AFN 4×4, despite the fact the accessory manufacturer has only been active in the Aussie market for the past four years or so. That’s because Gavin has thrown plenty of resources and marketing nous behind AFN 4×4 to offer four-wheel drivers an alternative to the traditional manufacturers of bullbars and other vehicle protection equipment. “It’s been a really tough market for AFN 4×4,” says Gavin. “Trying to grow the brand name and get publicity … we don’t have a budget like the big boys, we’re small fry, but we do believe that our approach and what we’ve been doing is pretty good.” And the Jimny gracing these page...

The Feldman brothers developers won unanimous approval to convert the historic James E. English Building on

The Feldman brothers developers won unanimous approval to convert the historic James E. English Building on State Street into 39 market-rate apartments as city planners applauded a nearly all-residential project that seeks to avoid the empty groundfloor storefront phenomenon. Commissioners granted that approval Wednesday night during the regular monthly meeting of the commission in the groundfloor meeting space at the 200 Orange St. municipal office building. They approved the site plan submitted by Jacob and Josef Feldman’s MOD Equities for 418 State St., the red-brick, four-story commercial-office building that was built circa-1865 and that currently sits vacant at the corner of State Street and Court Street downtown. The site plan calls for the building’s conversion into 39 apartments, a mix of one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms, as well as a ground-floor commercial space of roughly 844 square feet. Commissioners also granted unanimous approval for the developers to receive a special permit allowing them to build out apartments on the building’s first floor. The underlying zone for the district does not allow first-floor residential use as of right. As for the apartments being add...

Sonim announces shipments of new Rapid Deployment Kits, upcoming plans for package

Greater communications flexibility soon will be within the grasp of some public-safety agencies, as Sonim Technologies started shipping its Rapid Deployment Kit (RDK-2) with a FirstNet Ready Cradlepoint router and announced plans to further integrate satellite and LMR capabilities into the carry-case package later this year. Bob Escalle, Sonim Technologies’ vice president for public-safety market segments, said the RDK-2 provides deployable LTE and Wi-Fi coverage in a package that is small enough to be carried to locations where a vehicular deployable is not practical. “It extends the range [of LTE by extending an access-point bubble,” Escalle said during an interview with IWCE’s Urgent Communications. “Think of it as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that you bring with you that has router functionality and a PoE [power-over-Ethernet] switch, with the ability to have a satellite connection for quick failover.” Perhaps most importantly, the RDK-2 is designed to be deployed quickly at an incident scene by first responders, without any need for extensive special training, Escalle said. “You don’t need to be an engineer,” he said. “You pull it out. You flip up the antennas, because the ante...

Morgan Stanley might be talking a bear case price target of $10 on Tesla (TSLA +1%),

Morgan Stanley might be talking a bear case price target of $10 on Tesla (TSLA +1%), but undaunted Ark Invest is still talking huge targets in a research note. “Even if full autonomy turns out to be ‘science fiction’ and Tesla cannot produce an autonomous car, ARK estimates that the electric vehicle opportunity alone would boost its stock 2-6 fold from $195 today to $560-$1,200 by 2023. If Tesla does solve for full autonomy, however, and its electric vehicle production surpasses our bear case estimates, TSLA could scale significantly higher than our previous $4,000 price target during the next five years, thanks to our newly introduced bull case for electric vehicle volumes,” write analysts Tasha Keeney and Sam Korus. Ark’s math: “At an average selling price of $48,250 (today’s ASP), Tesla’s EV revenue would total $82 billion at 1.7 million units and $145 billion at 3 million, respectively, in 2023. In the bear case, gross margins would average 25%, which is Tesla’s guidance, while selling, general, and administrative costs (SG&A) average 10% of sales, comparable to that of other premium auto companies even though its overhead should be mu...

With increased focus on the environment and individual health, push reel mowers are seeing a resurgence

With increased focus on the environment and individual health, push reel mowers are seeing a resurgence in popularity. Modern bearings and gear mechanisms make them easier to use than ever, and because of the way they cut, they’re better for your grass than powered mowers. In the following guide we look at what you need to consider when deciding which reel mower to buy. We’ve also made a few recommendations. Our favorite, the Fiskars 18-Inch StaySharp, comes from a company well-known for quality. It offers precision cutting with less effort yet can still cope with the most difficult of grasses. Considerations when choosing reel mowers Pros and cons A reel mower has a rotating cylinder, usually with four or five blades, which cuts across a base plate called a “bed knife.” In essence, it’s like neatly cutting each blade of grass with a pair of scissors — unlike the pounding the grass would take from a rotary mower, which bruises and damages the fibers. The main drawback of a reel mower (though some might see it as a benefit) is the amount of physical effort required. However, today’s push mowers are much easier to use than their predecessors.
