Evergreen Plastics, Clyde, Ohio, is focusing on growing to meet new demands for rPET, including food-grade

Evergreen Plastics, Clyde, Ohio, is focusing on growing to meet new demands for rPET, including food-grade applications. Evergreen Plastics Ltd., Clyde, Ohio, began operations as the plastics recycling division of Polychem LLC, Mentor, Ohio, in 1998. Polychem is one of the world’s largest producers of plastic strapping. The company started Evergreen to develop a raw material source for its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) strapping. Greg Johnson, vice president of operations at Evergreen Plastics, says Polychem and Evergreen are vertically integrated. Evergreen recycles curbside-collected PET—primarily soft drink and water bottles—to produce recycled PET (rPET) flakes and pellets. Polychem uses recycled plastic from Evergreen to produce strapping, which is made of 100-percent- recycled materials. “We buy postconsumer baled bottles. We sort, grind and wash them, and then we use the material—the ground flake—to produce the strapping,” Johnson says. Since Evergreen was established, it has tripled in size. Johnson says the company started with 35 employees and a 75,000-square-foot facility in 1998. Today, it has about 200 employees and a 240,000-square-foot facility. Evergreen inst...

Homelessness in Koreatown: a parallel neighborhood of unhoused people has grown up around the existing community. Koreatown, LOS ANGELES—Resting inside one of the stone entryways of St. James Episcopal Church on St. Andrews Place, Josh Law heard a drunken man’s slurred speech and then the sound of an opening zipper. In 16 months of homelessness, Law had learned to sleep in an altered state of hypervigilance. He grabbed his makeshift bed of clothes and blankets—and dodged the stream of urine. Sixteen long months of hell, Law says. Sixteen months of adjusting his nightly agenda to the event schedule of the church so that he wouldn’t block a doorway with his bed. Sometimes he stretched out at 8 p.m.; sometimes he waited until 10 p.m. He always made sure he was up at 4 a.m., before the garbage truck drivers passed. “I didn’t want people to see me and think: ‘Oh, what a lazy homeless bum,’ ” Law said. But the number of homeless people in this country is steadily increasing; there are far too many for literal—or figurative—invisibility. The statistics extend gloomily from there. Advocates who work with the homeless estimate there are at least 2 million unhoused people in the United States. Between 2018 and 2019, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s count, the homeless popula...

A female Iraq War veteran fights through the effects of military sexual trauma and post-traumatic stress by filing a class-action lawsuit against the U.S. government with the hope of securing spousal benefits for same-sex couples. A World War II veteran, who waited years to receive military benefits, spends time helping others with the support of a young, civically minded Marine Corps veteran looking out for him. Those are the stories shared in a Mason City native’s documentary that will premiere nationwide on Tuesday. “Surviving Home,” a film directed, produced and edited by 1991 Mason City High School graduate Matthew Moul and his wife, Jillian, will broadcast at 7 p.m. Tuesday on WORL...

Glencore’s Mutanda Mine Closure Could Cripple Or Kill Tesla

On Aug. 6, Glencore announced plans to close its Mutanda mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the end of this year. In Slide 33 for its recent conference call, Glencore explained that Mutanda will produce 25,000 tonnes of cobalt this year, followed by two years in care and maintenance mode. In its 2018-2019 Cobalt Market Review, Darton Commodities forecast total global supply of 140,000 tonnes in 2020 vs. total global demand of 132,000 tonnes. Anionic Emulsion Polyacrylamide The Mutanda mine closure will immediately shift the cobalt supply and demand balance from a comfortable 4,000-tonne surplus to a crushing 19,000-tonne deficit. Since batteries for electric cars and stationary energy storage products require enormous amounts of cobalt, the Mutanda closure could be a crippling if not fatal blow for Tesla. It’s impossible to make the NCA batteries Tesla (TSLA) uses in its electric vehicles or the NCM batteries Tesla uses in its stationary energy storage products without cobalt. If the Mutanda mine is Anionic Polyacrylamide, Cationic polyacrylamide, Nonionic Polyacrylamide – Oubo,https://www.oubochem.com/

Using combination therapies with patients is widely accepted as one of the most successful treatment approaches

Using combination therapies with patients is widely accepted as one of the most successful treatment approaches in the aesthetic specialty. Dr. Gold says he uses several devices in tandem to get the most successful outcomes for his patients and shared those this year at Cosmetic Surgery Forum 2019 in Nashville, Tenn. One of those devices, the Venus Versa (Venus Concept) is a multi-treatment system that includes Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), radiofrequency (RF) with microneedling and bulk heating capabilities. The Venus Versa’s IPL applicators can be used as a photofacial machine, for hair removal or as a dual-light acne treatment. Used with its Multi-Polar RF and Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEMF) applicator, these treatments, when done in one session, bring “results [that] are pretty spectacular,” according to Dr. Gold. “If you do a series of three of these treatments, we’re finding incredible results in wrinkles, texture, tones, tightening, improvement and acne scars or other kinds of imperfections in the skin,” he says. For facial rejuvenation, there are three InMode technologies — Lumecca, Forma and Fractora — Dr. Gold says he examined clinically and when used togeth...

In The Colorado Glass Recycling Game, David Can’t Beat Goliath

Recycling businesses have taken a hit after Colorado’s biggest user of glass dropped the price it will pay for some materials. MillerCoors, which co-owns Rocky Mountain Bottle Company, said in a statement that the price drop brings them in-line with industry standards.  At Angel of Shavano Recycling in Poncha Springs, just outside of Salida, all the material they collect has an end-user — newspaper and phone books go to Penrose, where it’s turned into insulation. Mail goes to Oklahoma to become toilet paper, and the glass goes to Rocky Mountain Bottle. The company is one of the largest bottle producers in the country, and not just for six-packs of Coors Light. Colorado has a closed-loop economy for glass. It’s used here, recycled here and then reused here. It’s also incredibly heavy to transport.  Mickey Barry, co-owner of Angel of Shavano Recycling, said that’s the biggest challenge for rural recyclers. The price paid for his glass dropped from $60 to $20 a ton. Berry said that doesn’t even cover the cost to get it to Wheat Ridge, where Rocky Mountain Bottle operates. “It gets really hard for us to get a high market value for a clean commodity because our shipping rates are so...

Guidance released on aluminium composite materials cladding

In consultation with the Industry Response Group, independent expert advisory panel, building owners, and other experts, the Government has developed an information note to assist building owners in considering what measures to take to make buildings safe – and how they could carry out remedial works on high rise residential buildings with aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding. The information note contains a flow chart to guide building owners through the process of remediation and further information on the following: Building owners are responsible for determining whether their buildings are acceptably fire safe and will likely need to appoint professional advisors to assist them unless they have the relevant competence themselves or access to advice from those that do. Since June, the Government has been urging owners of private residential buildings over 18 metres to make urgent use of the free ACM screening tests, and to report the results to local authorities so that private sector blocks with ACM cladding systems can be identified. The Government are also working with local authorities to identify privately owned residential buildings over 18 metres with ACM ...
