Even if you're not much of a fan of the Duggar family, you probably know that the women in the family aren't allowed to wear pants. It was a decision that Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar made early on. None of the women in the family are allowed to wear pants by themselves, they must wear long skirts and dresses. Tights or leggings may be worn under said skirts, but never on their own.

In in a clip from TLC, Michelle explains her relationship with modesty and how she passed that on to her daughters.

"At 15 when I was born again as a Christian, I really began to view things differently because I was looking at it through God's frame of reference, and the scriptures. As I studied, I realized that if I wanted to honor the Lord, I needed to cover a few more areas of myself so I wasn't causing someone else to be defrauded," she explains. She added that she passed this notion down to her children through bible study when they were children.

Back in 2014, the older Duggar girls: Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger, wrote a book called Growing Up Duggar. In the book, they explain the concept of modesty in a little more detail. “We do not dress modestly because we are ashamed of the body God has given us; quite the contrary. We realize that our body is a special gift from God and that He intends for it to be shared only with our future husband,” they claim.

In a down defunct blog for TLC, Michelle explained why she chose skirts over pants when it came to dressing modestly. “Our interpretation was that from the neck down to the knee should be covered," she explained. “I really should be defining who I am as a woman by choosing to wear dresses and skirts,” she added.

Of all the older Duggar girls who've embraced, none have done it with the same enthusiasm as Jill Dillard. It feels like we see her in pants more often than not lately. If you're a longtime Duggar fan, this will be the most surprising because Jill was always the most faithful to the Duggar way of life. But in the last year or two, she's really started to come into her own as a person.

Wearing pants is just one of the many ways that Jill Dillard has shown she's her own woman. Could the sudden uptick in wearing pants have to do with the fact that she and her husband Derick Dillard have become distant from the rest of the Duggar family? After Derick got fired from the show Counting On, it seems their relationship with Jill's family changed. And it's only become more distant, as fans have observed. There's no way of knowing for sure, but it wouldn't be surprising if the two were somehow related.

Fans were definitely shocked when Jill rocked a pair of black "liquid" leggings in a recent photoshoot with cousin Amy (Duggar) King. The leggings take on a kind of faux leather look, and are quite form fitting. A definite departure from the long skirts Jill used to wear.

Jinger Vuolo, like her older sister, has really embraced wearing pants. In fact, she was actually the first of the Duggar girls to wear pants Jinger has always been seen as the more "rebellious" Duggar girl, so seeing her in pants isn't all that surprising. Since getting married, Jinger has definitely become more of a fashionista, and pants definitely add to her style transformation.

Her decision to wear leggings and pants more often was actually a plot point on Counting On. Jinger discussed her decision to change up her fashion choices with her mom Michelle. According to Jinger, she discussed her feelings about wearing pants with Michelle before she actually started doing it.

"We had a conversation before I started wearing pants," Jinger explains in the clip shared by In Touch Weekly. "I just shared my heart and where I saw the Lord leading me. They said to seek to honor Him and to maintain modesty. I'm grateful for their hearts and how they've instilled that in us kids.

Michelle added, "It's okay that my kids may have different convictions than me. I know that He's leading them, and that's the most important thing; their relationship with God."

While none of the other Duggar ladies have adopted wearing pants quite as enthusiastically as Jinger and Jill, some have certainly been spotted wearing pants at some point. Joy-Anna was seen wearing them while skiing on her honeymoon with husband Austin Forsyth. It would be pretty hard, if not impossible to safely ski in a skirt. Jessa has also been spotted wearing leggings under shorter dresses, which is about as close as she may get to pants. Jana Duggar was spotted wearing shorts during her younger brother Joseph's bachelor party.

Even the Duggar daughters-in-law have gotten in on the pants wearing trend. Abbie Duggar, wife of John David, works as a nurse and chooses to wear scrub pants instead of a scrub skirt. She even wore pants during a trip with John to Finland.
